Clinical Governance for Directors is a one day course that will help you develop a deep understanding of the directors' clinical governance duties and responsibilities, and provides insight to assist the director in how to understand, assess and question clinical governance such as compliance with National Standards, incident management, credentialing, Medico-legal and high risk clinical services monitoring.

This unique Clinical Governance course is designed for those currently serving or aspiring to serve as Healthcare Board Directors. It is also ideal for Senior Executives and Clinician Managers to gain expert knowledge of the clinical governance duties and responsibilities for Boards and Directors.

  • Healthcare Leaders accepting their first healthcare board director role.
  • Current Healthcare Board Directors.
  • Those aspiring to take on a directorship role on a healthcare board.
  • Healthcare Executives who report directly to a board.
  • Healthcare Directors of smaller hospitals and other healthcare facilities such as aged care, community care, primary care including private and not-for-profit organisations.

This course may be undertaken in conjunction with the AICD-AIHE Company Directors Course for Healthcare Leaders 6 day program or as a stand alone educational and training course.

Through exploring a healthcare director’s role in establishing and ensuring effective clinical governance practices, you will develop expertise in clinical governance from which to make more effective decision and ask the appropriate, relevant questions that will minimise your personal risk and improve the quality and safety of healthcare provided by your organisation.
Upon completion of the course, you will have detailed knowledge and application of:

  • The key roles and responsibilities as a healthcare director and that of the board, in clinical governance.
  • The key aspects of clinical governance, such as accreditation compliance, National Standards, credentialing, incident management and monitoring of health service performance.
  • Clinical governance aspects of risk management, impacts on insurance, medico-legal and Coroner reporting obligations.
  • Board KPIs for monitoring clinical governance.
  • The right questions to ask to understand if your health service is safe.

This course will be facilitated by practicing published authors who are medical specialists expert in Clinical Governance with extensive experience of healthcare boards across the public and private sector. The session uses relevant cases studies to help you understand the nuts and bolts of healthcare directorship, in an immersive setting with a group of peer healthcare leaders.

Clinical Governance for Directors is a one day course made up of two sessions.

The first session outlines the key clinical governance responsibilities of boards and its directors, the national and jurisdictional regulatory frameworks relating to clinical governance standards and compliance, and the history of board related clinical governance failures in Australia.

The second session outlines how the board monitors clinical governance performance and outcomes, using real-life case scenarios via simulation exercises, demonstrates how a board can ensure that they are fulfilling their obligations with respect to clinical governance and understand how to identify and respond to an impending clinical governance failure at their organisation.

On completion of the sixth day of the program and assessment, participants will receive the post nominals: Graduate of the Australian Institute of Health Executives (GAIHE).

The assessments undertaken are an opportunity for participants to consolidate their learning and to benchmark their understanding against the standard set by the AICD and AIHE. This includes multiple-choice/short answer assessement and a written reflective piece based on case-study analysis.

In addition the program will award successful participants with CPD points recognised by the Australian College of Nursing Practitioners (ACNP) and other organisations, including AHPRA CPD requirements. See Micro-credentialing for more information.
