Healthcare Board Education Designed for Impact

This unique AICD – AIHE program is designed for current, new and aspiring healthcare board directors, wanting to gain an expert knowledge of the key specific duties and responsibilities of health boards and directors.

For directors newly appointed to health boards, those who might be interested in pursuing a career as a director, and for those already on healthcare boards who need a better understanding of the unique challenges they face in the healthcare governance context, the Company Directors Course™ for Healthcare Leaders gives you the essential information you need to know.

The program covers all the key areas you will need to be across as a healthcare board director. Using contemporary case studies and with expert facilitators from healthcare backgrounds the programme covers roles, duties and responsibilities of healthcare Board directors including legal financial, risk, strategy and clinical governance.

Upon completion of the program, you will be able to:

• Identify the duties and responsibilities of a healthcare director.
• Outline governance and board meeting processes.
• Outline the director’s role in evaluating financial statements and performance.
• Identify the director’s role in formulating and monitoring strategy, and identifying and assessing risk.
• Understand the director’s role in ensuring robust clinical governance across the healthcare organisation.
• Recognise the link between corporate strategy, clinical governance and financial performance.

On each of the five AICD days you will undertake interactive working sessions facilitated by an experienced director, alongside a group of peers who are also committed to improving their director skills and capabilities.

The sixth AIHE day will be facilitated by practising medical specialists and published authors with expertise in clinical governance with extensive experience of healthcare boards across the public and private sector. The session uses relevant case studies to help you understand the nuts and bolts of healthcare directorship, in an immersive setting with a group of peer healthcare leaders.

The AIHE day also can be purchased individually for those who have already attained the GAICD and need further specific board director level training in clinical governance.

Duration

One day attendance for each course (6 days total).
There is approximately 10 hours of pre-reading per course day which must be completed before the program commences.

Day 1 Governance and the practice of directorship

• Develop a director mindset by learning the difference between governing and managing.

• Find out how governance structures impact organisational performance and culture.

• Understand how evolving societal expectations impact trust and business legitimacy.

Day 2 The legal environment

• Deepen your understanding of your directors’ duties, including fiduciaries, loyalty and good faith, and care and due diligence.

• Recognise your responsibilities to employees, environmental law and climate change.

• Stay up to date on competition law, consumer protection, privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property and international operations.

Day 3 Risk and strategy

Gain essential knowledge of board-level strategy development and monitoring, as well as all aspects of organisational risk:

• Structures for risk management and reporting

• Setting risk appetite

• The role of the board in risk oversight

• Where risk, strategy and culture intersect

• Crisis management and organisational resilience.

Day 4 Financial literacy and performance

• Understand your internal and external financial reporting obligations and responsibilities.


• Apply theoretical knowledge to interpreting financial statements and ratio analysis.


• Understand the three stages of board reporting and how to frame financial questions.

• Recognise insolvency signs and consequences.

Day 5 Achieving board effectiveness

• Learn how to create value and improve organisational performance through your board.

• Build a constructive board culture that values open discussion and collective decision making.

• Understand the importance of developing as a director, as well as evaluating and renewing the board.

Day 6 Clinical Governance for Directors

• Introduction to Clinical Governance for Directors

• How to know your Hospital is Safe: for Directors

• Directors regulatory responsibilities for clinical governance

• Critical clinical incident management for directors

• Understanding board-level reports on healthcare safety and quality.

Participants who successfully complete the first five days of the program and the subsequent assessment will attain the post nominals: Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).

On completion of the sixth day of the program and assessment, participants will receive the post nominals: Graduate of the Australian Institute of Health Executives (GAIHE).

The assessments undertaken are an opportunity for participants to consolidate their learning and to benchmark their understanding against the standard set by the AICD and AIHE.
