Know if your hospital is safe

Gain the foundational knowledge to effectively understand and monitor Clinical Governance. Clinical Governance for Directors is a one day course that will help you develop your understanding of the directors' clinical governance duties and responsibilities, and provides insight to assist the director in how to understand, assess and question clinical governance such as compliance with National Standards, incident management, credentialing, Medico-legal and high risk clinical services monitoring.

This unique Clinical Governance course is designed for new and aspiring Healthcare Directors, Senior Executives and Clinician Managers wanting to gain a foundational knowledge of the clinical governance duties and responsibilities for Boards and Directors.

  • Executives accepting their first healthcare board director role.
  • Those who are considering accepting a directorship on a healthcare board.
  • Healthcare Executives who report directly to a board.
  • Healthcare Directors of smaller hospitals and other healthcare facilities such as aged care, community care, primary care including private and not-for-profit organisations.

This course may be undertaken in conjunction with the Foundations of Directorship program or as a stand alone educational and training course.

Through exploring a healthcare director’s role in establishing and ensuring effective clinical governance practices, you will develop a solid foundation from which to make more effective decision and ask the appropriate, relevant questions that will minimise your personal risk and improve the quality and safety of healthcare provided by your organisation.
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain your key roles and responsibilities as a healthcare director and that of the board, in clinical governance.
  • Explain the purpose and essential features of clinical governance, such as accreditation compliance, National Standards, credentialing, incident management and monitoring of health service performance.
  • Explain the clinical governance aspects of risk management, impacts on insurance, medico-legal and Coroner reporting obligations.
  • Outline the board KPIs for monitoring clinical governance.
  • Know the right questions to ask to understand if your health service is safe.

During this course, you will undertake interactive working sessions facilitated by practicing medical specialists with extensive experience of healthcare boards across the public and private sector.

Clinical Governance for Directors is a one day course made up of two sessions.

The first session outlines the key clinical governance responsibilities of boards and its directors, the national and jurisdictional regulatory frameworks relating to clinical governance standards and compliance, and the history of board related clinical governance failures in Australia.

The second session outlines how the board monitors clinical governance performance and outcomes, using real-life case scenarios via simulation exercises, demonstrates how a board can ensure that they are fulfilling their obligations with respect to clinical governance and understand how to identify and respond to an impending clinical governance failure at their organisation.

The partnership between the Australian Institute of Health Executives (AIHE) and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Foundation offered an extraordinary professional development opportunity.

Participating in the Directorship Course expanded my understanding of governance, strategic leadership, and contemporary board practice.

The program provided a rare depth of insight into the responsibilities of directors in the health sector, and it significantly strengthened my confidence and capability to contribute at a senior leadership and board level. It was truly a transformative learning experience.

October 2025

I was privileged to attend the first AICD-AIHE Foundations of Directorship Health Variant course, which was delivered in an online format in October 2025. The course was delivered over our four days, which included governance, risk and strategy, finance and clinical governance for directors.

The course materials were of high quality and were very applicable to the healthcare sector, particularly the case studies. I learnt from my peers, who are senior healthcare leaders across the country, and particularly the four facilitators.

Professor Luis Prado, who facilitated the fourth day, made the complexity of clinical governance in healthcare setting come to life with real life examples shared. I would recommend this course to healthcare leaders who are interested in elevating their understanding of both corporate and clinical governance in the healthcare setting.

October 2025

I found the AICD-AIHE Foundations of Directorship Health Variant Course the perfect launching pad for my exploration into Health Management at a board level.

There was good detail in each day of the course. This was expertly supplemented by real life case studies and appropriate anecdotes and experiences that made the course interesting and relatable.

The presenters were engaging and there was lots of opportunity for engagement and interaction with other attendees. I was able to understand areas I previously found complex, especially finance reports.

The Clinical Governance for Directors day was the perfect way to put this information into the field that I am entering. The real world examples and suggestions were especially useful and practical for those entering Clinical Governance.

I highly recommend this excellent course for those wishing to embark on a health related governance pathway.
