The Masterclass is designed for clinician leaders, healthcare directors and senior executives, and managers seeking to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the practical skills required to effectively manage disruptive behaviours in the healthcare setting.
The AIHE Managing Disruptive Clinicians Masterclass provided a comprehensive toolkit for clinician directors newly appointed to clinical and specialty departments, or for executives and managers who would like a better handle on understanding how to effectively respond to challenging situations in their roles. It offers the practical skills and knowledge to leaders who have healthcare staff reporting to them directly or indirectly, to undertake their responsibilities and excel in their role from the outset.
What are the learning objectives?
The Masterclass covers all the key tools you need as a healthcare leader with responsibility for managing clinical staff, including your reporting obligations, ensuring clinician welfare, undertaking procedurally fair investigations and effectively managing impairment and disruption in your healthcare setting.
Upon completion of the Masterclass, you will be able to:
- Identify the duties and responsibilities of a healthcare leader in managing disruptive and/or impaired clinicians.
- Identify and recognise early markers and learn crisis intervention techniques for responding to confronting scenarios.
- Undertake procedurally fair investigative processes, and respond to confronting situations and difficult conversations.
- Outline the healthcare leader’s role in evaluating and managing the welfare of an impaired and/or disruptive clinician.
- Develop and implement effective clinician welfare action plans.
- Understand the healthcare leader’s role in mandatory reporting requirements and identifying and assessing patient and staff risk.
- Understand the role of AHPRA, medical defence organisations and Specialty Colleges.
- Understand the leader’s role in setting the tone for positive cultures within healthcare organisations.
- Recognise the link between disruptive behaviour, patient harm, clinical outcomes and operational performance.
- Undertake clinical reviews and performance monitoring.
- Learn how to approach and effectively run face to face meetings with challenging individuals.
- Understand how to effectively implement and adapt AIHE’s RIJC© Behaviour Management Program within their unique settings.
- Learn to manage “self” in response to difficult interactions and tough conversations.
